Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology and Pediatrics-CHLA

The Division of Neurology, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California (USC) are actively seeking a full-time pediatric clinical psychologist (PhD) for the position of Associate Professor of Clinical Neurology and Pediatrics. The position will include an academic appointment at Keck School of Medicine, University of California (USC) at a rank commensurate with qualifications and experience. The ideal candidate will have clinical experience in sleep, sleep interventions, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, and research experience in sleep intervention.

Division of Neurology:

The Division of Neurology is part of the Neurosciences Service Line (the Neurological Institute) which has been highlighted as a key service line by the hospital. The Division of Neurology is currently undergoing rapid expansion with the development of comprehensive clinical general and sub-specialty child neurology programs as well as enhancement of its research portfolio. A brand-new integrated clinic space for the Divisions of Neurology and Neurosurgery opened in the Spring of 2021. The goal of the Neurologic Institute is to offer comprehensive and integrated neurologic services in a patient-centered environment. Neurology & Neurosurgery has been consistency ranked nationally among the top 10 programs in the US News & World Report rankings.

CHLA is a busy urban teaching hospital with a diverse patient population. There is a very active outpatient neurology clinic with subspecialty programs in neuromuscular disorders (MDA), epilepsy (including a Level 4 epilepsy center providing surgical resection, VNS, and ketogenic diet), movement disorders (including deep brain stimulation and baclofen pump), neuro-intensive care, pediatric stroke, neurocutaneous disorders and demyelinating disorders. Our faculty currently provide outpatient clinical services to CHLA and five satellite clinic locations within the greater Los Angeles area. The division has an ACGME-approved child neurology residency program which operates in collaboration with the KSOM LAC + USC/University Hospital. Our division accepts three child neurology residents per year who divide their time between the two sites.  Furthermore, there is ongoing clinical research within our general child neurology and subspecialty programs. 

Clinical Psychologist

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Primarily perform cutting-edge research and contribute towards the division’s growing research portfolio to ensure our research studies include the diverse patient communities of CHLA
  • Conduct outpatient clinical psychological evaluations for pediatric neurosurgical and neurological patients.
  • Perform clinically indicated psychological evaluation of patients with actual and suspected neurological diseases and disorders.
  • Prepare comprehensive written assessment reports, which may include diagnostic impressions.
  • Provide consultation with regard to cognitive and behavioral rehabilitation for patients with neurological disorders (e.g. epilepsy, developmental delay, stroke).
  • Use psychological test results to inform planning for pediatric epilepsy surgery.
  • May act as a liaison between neurology and other medical departments to develop appropriate triage and treatment programs for patients with complex medical and psychological/psychosocial needs.
  • Participate in clinical activities with neurologists, epileptologists, and neurosurgeons.
  • May make recommendations or referrals for community resources (e.g. relevant social service agencies and community organizations) to meet patients’ needs.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • May provide clinical supervision to doctoral-level psychology externs, postdoctoral psychology fellows, and other mental health trainees or medical residents as necessary.
  • May provide direct intervention with patients, specific to neuropsychological issues, including psychotherapy and/or family consultation where indicated. Treatment may include direct intervention and program development as well as consultation with other professionals and family members.

Education/Licensure/Certification/Qualifications: Requirements for this position include completion of an APA- or CPA-accredited doctoral program in psychology with formal training in clinical neuropsychology, completion of an APA- or CPA-accredited internship, and completion of a formal 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology with a pediatric emphasis. Applicants must be licensed as a PhD clinical psychologist in the state of California before appointment begins. Qualified candidates must be board certified through ABPP/ABCN or be prepared to seek such certification, which will be expected. Candidates should possess strong clinical, interpersonal, analytical and writing skills. Research experience will be a significant asset. Fluency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

The annual base salary range for this position is $116,505-$417,709.  When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
