Budget/Business Technician

Viterbi School of Engineering Los Angeles, California

The USC Viterbi School of Engineering seeks to recruit a Budget/Business Technician (BBT) to support day-to-day operations at the Mork Family Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science (MFD). The BBT will specifically support operations in the research administration unit, with a focus on managing procurement (purchasing materials for research operations), processing reimbursements, and monitoring/tracking expenses in these areas. The BBT will support a team of 5-6 research administrators in the unit and also provide procurement support to the department.

The successful candidate is an adaptable, agile professional with experience in managing budgets and/or managing purchasing and reimbursements. Excel skills are prized, as is a collegial and team-oriented attitude.

The specific duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing purchases and reimbursements to meet MFD’s research and operational needs.
  • Procuring materials for MFD’s instructional lab.
  • Monitoring and tracking expenditures in accordance with related budgets.
  • Reconciling department and research accounts against university financial systems.
  • Collaborating with various internal and external vendors to streamline procurement.
  • Maintaining equipment inventory and process maintenance requests for MFD’s instructional, office and laboratory spaces.
  • Assist with periodic financial reports for internal/external use.
  • Help coordinate logistics for MFD’s related events.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

The hourly rate range for this position is $23.10 - $25.68. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

This is a hybrid position requiring the employee to be on site 3 days per week.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum Education: High school or equivalent; combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
  • Minimum Experience/Field of Expertise: Some related office financial experience to provide a knowledge of accounts payable, income and expense accounting and reconcilement, and budget preparation.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Preferred Education: Associate's degree with related undergraduate study
  • Preferred Experience /Field of Expertise: College coursework in business administration, accounting or related field and 1-2 years of directly related work experience.
