Chaplain - Chaplaincy - Per Diem 8 Hour Rotating Shift (Non-Exempt) (Non-Union)

Per diem Chaplain provides spiritual counseling and support, in accordance with patient, family and interdisciplinary team member beliefs and desires. Communicates with and enables the clergy or faith community to support patients and families. He/she demonstrates a professional and personal commitment to spiritual growth, has basic training in hospital or other spiritual care ministry, and upholds the ethical standards of professional chaplains. Provides spiritual consultation and education to patients, families and interdisciplinary team members. These services are accompanied through visitation, a ministry of hospitality, crisis intervention, consultation on ethical issues, and on call coverage as requested.

Essential Duties:

  • Responds to urgent situations, including medical emergencies (Code Blue) and deaths, at the request of administrative coordinators, nurses and family. Maintains medical and personal patient information confidential. Works with individuals from diverse economic, cultural, racial and religious backgrounds.
  • Provides spiritual care and patient health services with an interdisciplinary approach. Documents visits and interventions appropriately, adhering to organizational standards.
  • Works with hospital staff to enhance sensitivity about spiritual concerns for patients and families experiencing terminal illness and loss. Accountable to the organizational mission, core vision and values.
  • Evaluate patient needs for spiritual care and initiates or recommends individual programs and services to meet those needs. Integrates this plan of care into the interdisciplinary plan of care.
  • Determine and support spiritual practices in keeping with the patient's and family's religious tradition.
  • Act as liaison between local clergy and patients in relation to their ongoing care within their own religious tradition.
  • Implement and maintain established department, unit, and hospital policies, procedures, and objectives as well as improving organization performance, patient/customer safety, environmental, and infection control policies.
  • Provide coverage for Staff Chaplains as assigned
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree Theology Degree preferably in theology or related field from an accredited Seminary, College or University required.
  • Req 1 year Minimum one (1) year experience providing spiritual care in a healthcare setting or pastoral care ministry required.
  • Req Ability to participate in pastoral/spiritual care-giving to persons of any faith group and sensitivity to diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural practices and values.
  • Req Ability to function effectively in crisis or under stress.
  • Req Capable of theological and spiritual reflection with persons that includes evaluation patient needs for spiritual care and initiates or recommends services to meet those needs.
  • Req Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with other staff members, managers, volunteers, administrators, patients, and families.
  • Req Ability to communicate spiritual and/or religious needs of patients to the multi-disciplinary health care team and to other chaplains/spiritual care-givers.
  • Req Ability to work/cooperate with community religious leaders and their gifts to the hospital spiritual care and ministry.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Certification - Job Relevant Board Certified Chaplain with APC, NACC or NAJC


Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Certification - Job Relevant Minimum (2) units of Clinical Pastoral Education completed from an accredited program or equivalent.
  • Req Certification - Job Relevant Ordained, licensed or endorsed for ministry by their prospective recognized faith community.
  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The hourly rate range for this position is $29.00 - $45.20.
