About AnnLab: The Annenberg Innovation Lab is a curious, creative and committed Think & Do Tank at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. We practice innovation as a collaborative exploration involving artists, scientists, humanists and industry professionals working together on problems and opportunities at the dynamic intersections of media, technology, culture and society.

We combine rigorous scholarship and human-focused implementation to help understand and shape the interactions of emergent technologies and media with community, business, learning, making, governance and more. Our research is integrated with convening, building and teaching, and creates a tight and meaningful connection between theory and practice. We endeavor to work in the open to invite others into the process to test and build upon our insights.

We believe that diversity is a super-power -- a resource to be leveraged not managed -- and our attention to it runs through everything we do. As part of learning with and from each other, the work and well-being of our community are profoundly strengthened by the differences among us, spanning background, culture, lived experience, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, race, ethnicity, age, ability, and much more….and we actively seek and welcome people from across these spectra. Recognizing that it is a work forever in progress, we are committed to harnessing -- and demonstrating -- the sheer dynamism, joy and strength of an inclusive and empowered community in pursuit of shared goals and broader social progress.

About the Participatory Civic Media Fellowship: Curated by the Annenberg Innovation Lab at the University of Southern California (USC) (AnnLab) with amazing support from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Civic Media Fellowship engages a new generation of practitioners who use media, technology and culture to increase public participation, enable exchange of meaningful information, foster social connectivity, construct critical perspectives, promote transparency and accountability, or strengthen civic agency. With special attention to historically marginalized populations and perspectives, the Fellowship ambitiously aims to extend individuals’ capacity, foster our potential as a community, and help build out the civic media field.

In January 2019, four Founding Fellows were brought on as the residential core of a learning community, innovation hub and network that welcomes scholars, practitioners and diverse community partners. Beginning with a half-year paid residency at USC in Los Angeles, these Fellows are enjoying a unique opportunity to think and do — collaboratively undertaking creative and meaningful projects fueled by exploration, teaching and learning with students, peers and mentors, and undergirded by unique resources from USC and our broader network. Five additional remote Fellows joined us in March, also for a six-month period. Our second cohort (of both residential and remote fellows) will begin in late August 2019 and last the academic year with a new cohort starting each August thereafter.

In keeping with the spirit of peer and experiential learning, residential Fellows will be located in Los Angeles during their fellowship. Approximately three days in a typical week are dedicated to co-located work, centered around the USC campus, but also including group field trips and site visits. Remote fellows are similar, except that they are deeply involved in existing work and unable to make the time and location commitment that characterize the residency. This “remote-first” experience is designed to support a distributed community realizing ongoing and new projects, while also connecting with the residential program. Remote fellows participate about 8 hours per week, including about 2 hours per week spent in communication with the cohort. In short, the residency is more oriented for a journey while the remote is more attentive to a destination, with each hopefully leading to a balanced experience that celebrates and supports both, while creating complementary relationships among people, practices and activities. All Fellows will meet together in Los Angeles for longer gatherings on occasion, and we aim to find time to travel together as well, in every case doing our utmost to value Fellows’ presence and our time together -- our most scarce and precious resources!
