Dance Percussionist

Glorya Kaufman School of Dance Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California is seeking applicants for the position of Dance Percussionist for the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. In 2012, USC received a transformational gift from philanthropist Glorya Kaufman to establish a new conservatory-style school of dance. In fall 2015, the School opened its doors to its first cohort of students pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Now fully operational, USC Kaufman is seeking a highly experienced Dance Percussionist to provide accompaniment in the form of percussion to weekly jazz, contemporary, and African dance classes. S/he will report directly to the Music Director of the School and will work closely with course faculty leads. Ideal candidates will be virtuosic and highly knowledgeable of dance. Under some supervision, s/he will provide percussion accompaniment and musical guidance during dance technique, repertory, and/or improvisation classes. Experience working in higher education preferred. Experience accompanying dance classes required. All members of USC Kaufman’s staff and faculty may participate in and are expected to support the school’s equity, diversity and inclusion efforts, which may include serving on a committee, attending required workshops and training, etc. This is part-time benefits eligible position. Candidates will provide 19-21 hours per week of accompaniment during the Fall and Spring semesters and will be furloughed during the summer months. Hourly rate projected to be $43-$47.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide percussion accompaniment for contemporary, jazz, African, and other dance classes. Additional responsibilities could include playing for auditions and rehearsals for productions as needed;
  • Prepare and play appropriate repertoire for dance classes, in multiple musical styles, and improvise and perform music with appropriate rhythms;
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Desired Skills:

  • Ability to play percussion instruments proficiently;
  • Ability to accompany dance groups in their rehearsals and performances;
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of dance accompaniment, including incorporating possible electronic/hybrid elements via laptop and/or other portable equipment;
  • Ability to learn contemporary dance terminology;
  • Knowledge of basic understanding of music notation, adaptation, rehearsal, and taping;
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with students, faculty, and staff.

Minimum Education: Prior experience accompanying dance classes at the collegiate, professional or pre-professional level required. Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum Experience: Two (2) years of experience playing percussion accompaniment for dance classes. Experience and/or education of the same kind, level or amount as required in the minimum qualifications may be substituted on a year-for-year basis. Minimum Field of Expertise: Piano or percussion accompaniment experience working with professional companies and/or higher education institutions.
