The USC Office of Culture, Ethics and Compliance (OCEC) coordinates USC’s Culture Journey and is responsible for the overarching ethics and compliance strategy and program for the University. The compliance program is intended to facilitate the institution’s commitment to comply with all applicable laws and regulations, detect and correct compliance violations promptly, and eliminate misconduct and other unethical behavior through the diligent and analytical work of its team members. OCEC is also responsible for the Integrity and Accountability Code and engaging with stakeholders from across the University regarding compliance and ethics issues.
The Electronic Information Technology Accessibility Specialist serves as a key specialist and subject matter expert to ensure the university’s technology, computer software, and systems permit all persons with disabilities to acquire the same information, engage in the same interactions, and enjoy the same services with substantially equivalent ease of use as those without disabilities. The EIT Accessibility Specialist will participate in efforts to ensure the university’s compliance with technical accessibility standards and requirements in conjunction with the Americans with Disabilities (ADA) Act, and other relevant laws.
Reporting to the Electronic Information Technology Accessibility Coordinator, the Electronic Information Technology Accessibility Specialist will:
Collaborate with key colleagues in the university community to implement accessibility best practices.
Support implementation of the USC's Digital Accessibility Program
Provide technical guidance as part of the Program to make technology platforms consistent with USC governance structures and industry standards.
Participate in procurement reviews of campus technologies.
Conduct code level and screen reader based digital accessibility audits and provides guidance to developers on and off-campus.
Promote the university’s programs for technology accessibility by facilitating training on principles, tools, and techniques for targeted members of the university who develop web content, maintain websites.
Help to develop digital accessibility education materials and educates the USC community about digital accessibility and furthers the digital experience mission.
Implement outreach efforts and communications to increase awareness of EIT.
Participate in campus workgroups and committees when a digital accessibility expert is needed.
Assist in implementing policies, practices, and procedures related to the design, selection, and maintenance of accessible technology and digital materials for core EIT areas.
Analyze and interpret program and technical information regarding ICT accessibility statutes, rules, regulations, standards, and policies. And resolve any complex and difficult ICT accessibility challenges.
Assist in reviews of Voluntary Product Accessibility Templates (VPAT) for web apps under development or considered for procurement.
Assist in the exception request and recommendation process.
At the direction of the Digital Accessibility Coordinator, conducts peer benchmarking, industry best practice research, and assists in the preparation of materials for presentation to the Digital Accessibility Executive Steering Committee and Stakeholder Committees.
Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.
Advanced skills in use of a range of accessibility OS features, accessibility auditing software (AxePro, SiteImprove, WAVE), and assistive technologies JAWS, VoiceOver, NVDA).
Advanced understanding of the WCAG 2.1 AA or most recent standard for web accessibility.
Advanced understanding of PDF accessibility and remediation.
Direct experience with ARIA, HTML, CSS code and other coding standards that produce well-built accessible web content and applications.
Excellent communication skills. Experience working in a time-sensitive role while simultaneously handling multiple projects.
Experience applying best practices in universal design for learning to creating instructional digital resources.
Enthusiasm for ensuring that digital infrastructure allows all users an equitable and inclusive experience; Commitment to continuous improvement; Willingness to share new ideas and learn from others.
DHS Trusted Tester Certification, CSUN Digital Accessibility Certification, or IAAP CPACC, and advanced understanding of the connections between effective accessible design and overall successful user interfaces for all users.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
