Facilities Assistant

School of Architecture Los Angeles, California

The University of Southern California (USC)'s School of Architecture seeks an experienced Facilities Assistant to join our Facilities Operations and Woodshop teams. As a part of our team, you will play a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of the Woodshop, maintenance of the School of Architecture facilities, and provide support to the Woodshop and Facilities manager. This position involves hands-on work with light hand tools, facilities equipment, moving of shop and facilities equipment, collaboration with faculty and staff, and fostering a safe and productive environment for staff and students.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

  • Move and/or assemble furniture and facilities equipment.
  • Prep and paint walls including sanding, patching, taping, etc.
  • Operate and maintain light hand and power tools for a variety of tasks, ensuring proper functionality and use.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff on projects as needed.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshoot technical issues with facilities equipment.
  • Routine inspections of the facilities and reporting of any issues to the Facility Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with safety protocols and university regulations.
  • Maintain an organized inventory of materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Supervise safe operation of tools and equipment in the Wood Shop.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a professional environment.
  • Proficiency in operating hand tools to build furniture and other equipment.
  • Experience identifying and reporting facilities-related issues as appropriate.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively engage staff.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

Other Requirements:

  • Must possess ability to safely perform the physical work required of all duties, including manual dexterity, agility, strength and coordination.
  • Occasionally: sit, crouch/squat, climb, power grasping, heaving pushing/pulling
  • Must be able to work occasional weekdays/weeknights, holidays as needed beyond regularly scheduled hours (up to 30 hours) per week.
  • Frequently: stand, walk, bend, reach above shoulder level, use of keyboard/mouse, light lifting (up to 25 lbs.), hand dexterity, hand twisting, simple grasping, light pushing / pulling; moderate assisted/unassisted lifting: moderate pushing / pulling; moving of machinery, exposure to outdoor work environments
  • Deliver excellent customer service and maintain clarity and composure when faced with difficult situations.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education
  • Knowledge of architectural model making and processes
  • Experience in a makerspace or woodshop environments.
  • Experience as part of a facilities operations team.  
  • Excellent skills in communication, organization, collaboration, and time-management
  • Ability to work successfully within a team of staff and faculty.
  • Understanding of higher education operations and environments.

The hourly rate range for this position is $16.04 - $24.00.
