Field Payroll Analyst

The University of Southern California is seeking a Field Payroll Analyst to join our Provost Shared Services Payroll team. This critical role will serve as the primary payroll contact for a diverse group of units, ensuring the timely and accurate processing of payroll for staff, student employees, and international scholars. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and has a passion for payroll operations.

About Provost Shared Services

USC Provost Shared Services provides business services to the Office of the Provost, senior university leadership, and a variety of academic and administrative units across the USC community. Comprised of several units; Information Technology, Payroll Services, Finance & Controllership, Planning & Design, Faculty/Staff Visa Services, and Office of Institutional Research.

Mission

The mission of Provost Shared Services is to be a trusted business partner and deliver the highest standard of operational and administrative services in support of the academic mission. We accomplish this through fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, that emphasizes open and effective communication, well-being, belonging and collaboration.

Accountabilities:

  • Input and manage payroll data in Workday HCM for large population of employees, including staff and student workers.
  • Assist international students and scholars with onboarding processes, tax documentation, and payroll setup using Glacier and other systems.
  • Collaborate with units and central payroll to address missing documents, notifications, and payroll inquiries.
  • Process student stipends and awards in compliance with university and legal requirements.
  • Serve as a liaison between central payroll and university units to ensure accurate setup of wages, payroll components, and Glacier reporting.
  • Provide guidance on payroll procedures and I-9 documentation requirements to student workers and international employees.
  • Communicate effectively with employees and departments to ensure smooth payroll operations.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree, combined experience/education as substitute
  • 3 years of experience as Payroll Technician, Coordinator, Analyst or Supervisor skilled in payroll processing with knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate payroll processes clearly.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5 years of experience as Payroll Technician, Coordinator, Analyst or Supervisor.
  • Knowledge of university or higher education payroll operations, including unionized environments.
  • Workday HCM experience, including data input, payroll processing, and report generation.
  • Proficiency in Excel; intermediate-level skills such as creating formulas, pivot tables, and performing data analysis.
  • Familiarity with student information systems (SIS) and handling payroll and college work-study management.
  • Understanding of tax systems, including Glacier, and processes related to Non-Resident Alien (NRA) taxation and scholarships.

The annual base salary range for this position is $71,400 - $79,267. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
