Genetic Counselor, Senior - CVTI Clinic - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt) (Non-Union)
Apply Keck Medicine of USC Hospital Los Angeles, CaliforniaThe Senior Genetic Counselor is responsible for conducting genetic intake on patients appropriate for genetic counseling/testing, conducts mutation risk and analysis and calculation. Assists in the treatment of patients and families with known genetic disorders, and of patients at risk for the development of genetic disorders. The Senior Genetic Counselor acts as a subject matter expert in their role. This level often handles the more complex and difficult functions of the role. The Senior role exercises independent judgment and initiative to resolve both routine and non-routine issues.
Essential Duties:
- Apply advanced expertise in conducting genetic diagnoses risk assessments and mutation probability analyses to evaluate complex presentations in families. May assist other counselors with genetic test selection. Innovates strategies to coordinate cascade testing as needed.
- Review patient concerns, motivations, expectations, risk perceptions and clarify the purpose of the evaluation. Provides comprehensive interpretations of results to patients and providers.
- Review modes of inheritance and present risk information based on pedigree analysis. Provides insight to patients and providers on the types of genetic variants to help ensure appropriate integration of results into medical care.
- Conducts genetic diagnosis risk and mutation probability analysis and calculations. Discuss testing strategies to refine genetic risk, and identify family members at risk. Initiates the coordination of care (to include care within USC/Norris and as needed for outside agencies) and follows up as needed.
- Formulates strategies for managing and coping with risk, helping patients obtain needed resources (e.g., social workers, psychiatrists). Provide accurate and complete documentation of counseling, testing and follow-up.
- Perform intakes, pre-reviews charts, charts and verifies follow-up reports of results on all cases and offer appropriate referrals.
- Builds and oversees design of medical record templates for genetic counseling,(e.g pre-appointment packets, referral forms, reports, questionnaires, and other documents used in clinic) testing and follow up. Coordinates referrals for internal/external specialists.
- Develops clinical expertise and contributes to program growth. Performs continuous service improvements and troubleshoots problems with minimum supervision
- Continue education in order to maintain an excellent and current knowledge base and all necessary licensure or certification.
- May conduct or participate in research projects related to specific genetic disorders.
- Provides training, guidance or mentorship to entry- and intermediate-level individuals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Req Master’s degree M.S. Genetic Counseling, Board eligible or Board certified
- Req 3-5 years Experience in genetic counseling.
- Req Organization/time management skills.
- Req Demonstrates ability to utilize effective, appropriate and diplomatic oral and written communication skills.
- Req Committed to excellence in patient care and customer service.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
- Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $95,680.00 - $158,230.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
