Head, Philosophy Library and Humanities Librarian

The University of Southern California (USC) Libraries seek a dynamic and innovative librarian to oversee our unique Hoose Library of Philosophy and, as a humanities librarian, to take the lead in supporting multidisciplinary research, teaching, and digital initiatives in the humanities.

Reporting to the Director of Arts and Humanities Division, the successful candidate will have the initiative, energy, and commitment to develop transformative library services through collaboration with researchers in philosophy and other humanities disciplines, as well as with the USC Sidney Harmon Academy for Polymathic Study, and the emerging USC Libraries Initiative for Collection-Focused Research.

The Head, Philosophy Library and Humanities Librarian will develop, promote, and support innovative digital scholarship services. In addition, the librarian will also contribute to general reference services and information literacy instruction in the USC Writing Program, General Education Program, disciplinary initiatives, and other units as required. 

This position requires a commitment to developing student-focused services and a combination of skills and confidence that will contribute to the transformation of instruction, outreach, reference, and collections at USC Libraries.  We seek candidates motivated by a passion to develop transformative library services and invested in the future of librarianship. The successful candidate is expected to be creative in identifying and solving problems within a collegial and collaborative environment.  The successful candidate must be knowledgeable of current relevant library and scholarly information trends and practices, and be able to apply this understanding to make a significant, positive impact on the USC community. Duties include weekend and evening hours.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Reporting to the Director of the Arts and Humanities Division, the librarian will:

· Lead and manage the Hoose Library of Philosophy in the context of the Libraries’ strategic plan, while ensuring the integrity of its collections and spaces

· Serve as library liaison to the School of Philosophy and other humanities disciplines in the Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences

·Work collaboratively with librarians, faculty, and students to ensure appropriate access to disciplinary collections and services

·Participate in the Libraries’ teaching and information literacy programs

·Provide in-person and virtual reference and research consultation services

·Develop disciplinary and thematic research guides to highlight collections, research methodologies, and humanities-based resources that support library and other campus events

· Identify and evaluate existing tools and technologies, and identify emerging technologies that could effectively support advanced humanities research

·Collaborate with the Harmon Academy for Polymathic Study and the USC Libraries Initiative on Collection-Focused Research to support and encourage digital scholarship

·Engage in professional and/or subject discipline organizations, research, or publishing that will have a significant positive impact on the Hoose Library of Philosophy, and advance the USC Libraries’ strategic plan and the University’s strategic vision

·Participate in library and other committees as assigned

·Provide evening and weekend service as assigned

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum qualifications: MLS from an ALA accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent is typically required for a librarian appointment at USC. In addition, candidates must have:

·An academic degree in a humanities or a social sciences discipline

·At least two years of experience providing information literacy instruction and reference services in a large academic, research, or public library

·Demonstrated understanding of contemporary issues of scholarly communication within the humanities

·Experience working in collection management or collection development

·Experience with outreach to researchers and with providing student-centered services in an academic setting

·Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills

·Evidence of management and budget-related experience

·Experience working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds in an academic setting

·Demonstrated ability to work in a collegial consultative environment

·Knowledge of trends and issues in academia and library service

·Knowledge of humanities and social science library resources

Desirable qualifications:

·An advanced degree in the humanities

·Knowledge of trends within the digital humanities

·Experience working with scholars in the development of digital scholarship and scholarly communication projects

·Understanding of intellectual property, copyright, and ethical issues in humanities research.

FACULTY APPOINTMENT RANK/SALARY

Rank: Assistant University Librarian

Librarians at USC have faculty status. This is a full-time, continuing appointment track position. Appointment to the continuing appointment track requires the potential to meet the University’s criteria for granting continuing appointment – excellence in librarianship – which librarians achieve by having a significant impact on the development and/or implementation of high quality collections and/or services. Additionally, librarians must demonstrate the expectation of continued excellence and growth in professional expertise. Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
