Job Summary

The Southern California Earthquake Center (SCEC) studies earthquakes and their effects using southern California as our natural laboratory. Our staff includes a diverse group of individuals from local and worldwide communities, who work to advance the Center’s high standards and strong reputation as a leader in earthquake science research. We nurture an inclusive, collaborative culture, where each employee is treated as an important contributor.

SCEC is headquartered within the USC Dana and David Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences, and seeks a full-time Office Assistant to join our team. Candidates for this forward-facing position should be adept at numerous administrative tasks, including: responding to external and internal inquiries; maintaining office calendar; expense processing and travel arrangements for research staff at USC and at our collaborating institutions; purchasing; and budget monitoring. Other duties include helping to organize regular events ranging from large conferences to office staff meetings to web-based telecons. Daily tasks include supply management, creating and maintaining new hire materials and office manual, website editing, and general office coordination.

The ideal candidate will be an exceptional team player, who enjoys a fast-paced and challenging work setting, with a minimum of 2 years of administrative experience within a university setting. Strong skills in Office 365, especially Microsoft Excel, and independent time-management skills are essential. Some knowledge of earthquake science, natural hazards resiliency, or emergency preparedness is desirable.

Minimum Education:Specialized/technical training, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education

Minimum Experience: 2 years, Combined education/experience as substitute for minimum experience

Minimum Field of Expertise: General office experience with some supervisory responsibility.

Preferred Education: Associate’s degree

Preferred Experience: 3 years

Preferred Field of Expertise: General office experience in a university setting with some supervisory experience
