Postdoc Research Associate

Center for Genetic Epidemiology Los Angeles, California

Postdoctoral research position at USC in genetic epidemiology

Salary Range: starting at $50,004 or commensurate with experience

A postdoctoral research position is available in the Center for Genetic Epidemiology, in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine. This will be a position in the labs of Dr. Linda Polfus and Dr. Adam de Smith, both of whom have a research focus on the genetic epidemiology of complex traits. The role will mainly involve statistical genetics and bioinformatics analyses, including conducting genome-wide association studies, polygenic risk score analysis, and analysis of next-generation sequencing data to identify rare variants in predisposition genes. The research will utilize data from the Multiethnic Cohort (MEC), a large, prospective study of cancer and other phenotypes in largely non-European ancestry populations.

The research will mainly be focused on the genetic epidemiology of breast cancer risk and patient outcomes. There will also be opportunities for involvement in other research projects in the Polfus and de Smith labs, including from Dr. Polfus’ lab involvement in the TOPMed consortia inflammatory biomarkers/hematology working groups, novel statistical approaches to genomics/metabolomics (BPAs and Phthalates) of breast cancer, as well as polygenic risk scores of COPD and lung cancer evaluated in longitudinal statistical models and from Dr. de Smith several research projects focused on the causes of childhood leukemia.

The Center for Genetic Epidemiology is closely linked with the Departments of Preventive Medicine, Translational Genomics and Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. The Department of Preventive Medicine is one of the nations leading research programs in epidemiology and biostatistics, with particular expertise in genetics research in diverse populations. The Departments of Translational Genomics and Computational Biology and Bioinformatics provide key technological, methodological and statistical supports of genetics research. Together, these Departments offer exceptional resources and collaborative opportunities for postdoctoral fellows.

The position is available for 2 years and renewable contingent on successful progress and available funding. Salary will be competitive. The University of Southern California offers a competitive benefits package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and short and long term disability insurance.

Candidates should have a recent Ph.D. in genetics, epidemiology, biology, bioinformatics, or a related field. Proficiency in one or more programming languages is required (e.g. R and SAS with proficiency in python, perl, C++ a plus). Competitive applicants will also have extensive experience in conducting human genetics research and analyzing large genetic datasets, and the desire to apply for external fellowship funding. Preference will be given to candidates with a compelling publication record, evidence of substantial research productivity, and ability to successfully communicate scientific information.

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The position is expected to start in Summer 2019, though specific dates are negotiable.

Interested candidates should submit a CV, short (1-2 pages) cover letter describing your research interests and fit within the lab, and contact information for 2-3 references.

Minimum Education: Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate within previous five years Minimum Experience: 0-1 year Minimum Field of Expertise: Directly related education in research specialization with advanced knowledge of equipment, procedures and analysis methods.
