USC is consistently ranked among the nation’s most prestigious universities, and the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology features one the world’s best degree and research programs in gerontology. The USC Davis School has an international reputation as a hub of aging research and, with additional strong programs throughout the university, leads the way in defining and advancing the field of gerontology.

The USC Davis School of Gerontology is seeking a Research Associate to join its team! This position is responsible for the planning, designing and conducting highly technical and complex research projects independently and in consultation with supervisor. The laboratory of Dr. Marc Vermulst is interested in hiring a highly experienced Research Associate to support its efforts in understanding the role of genetic instability in human aging and disease. The successful applicant will be responsible for contributing to multiple projects that investigate the impact of genetic instability on mammalian physiology. An important tool frequently used in the lab to monitor genetic instability is a set of massively parallel sequencing approaches. As a result, some experience with the construction of next-gen sequencing libraries is highly desirable. Applicants familiar with the bioinformatic analysis of these libraries are highly encouraged to apply. In addition, the successful applicant will investigate new therapies for patients that suffer from mtDNA disease using mouse models with highly genetic backgrounds. These experiments will initially focus on mitochondrial function, apoptosis, and growth factors, and requires a broad knowledge of mammalian physiology. The research environment in the Vermulst laboratory is highly collaborative, provides a broad platform for scientific development and encompasses numerous biological disciplines. As a result, it is an excellent incubator for the growth of new ideas that could serve as the basis for an independent position. It is further expected that the applicant will write numerous high- profile publications, aide the PI with grant writing and peer review, and ultimately develop a strong independent research program that may lead to an independent position elsewhere. Please note that a desire to learn, good communication skills, and a willingness to work with others, is required for being successful in this research environment.

This is an exempt/salary position who will be expected to work at least 40hrs a week. Benefits include a competitive salary, a rich array of USC benefits including healthcare (including dental and vision), 403(b), tuition reimbursement, national holidays, paid vacation and more. This is a full-time salaried position that will require substantial commitment and flexibility.
