Research Lab Tech II

Keck School of Medicine Los Angeles, California

The Department of Translational Genomics is seeking a motivated full-time Research Lab Technician II. The successful candidate will have significant experience in a research laboratory setting with demonstrated knowledge and competency in various key functional areas, particularly in cancer genomics, transcriptomics, and cell biology, with an emphasis on experimental optimization and execution.  Candidates will have a quantitative, engineering, or computational background and will be involved in mentored bioinformatics analysis of next-generation sequencing data.

The successful applicant must possess and demonstrate a willingness to learn and employ new skill sets that will contribute to the PI’s research program (both technically and intellectually) as he/she will be expected to contribute to the overall success and growth of the laboratory objectives.

The ideal candidate will have excellent interpersonal communication skill with high emphasis on collaboration, a meticulous attention to details, competent at working independently, and the ability to easily adapt to a wide scope of projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 2 years of experience working in a molecular laboratory.

  • Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated strong curriculum in quantitative biology including engineering, computational science, and biostatistics.

  • Experience with high throughput molecular biology techniques.

  • Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data.

  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory equipment and protocols.

  • Provides general laboratory assistance to support research activities.

  • Conducts research experiments in accordance with laboratory and safety protocols.

  • Performs assignments which are non-routine and vary in complexity with minimal direction.

  • Compiles data and computes results for a variety of research procedures, tests and techniques.

The hourly rate range for this position is $21.22 - $23.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.

The successful candidate will have an opportunity to work in a team-oriented environment and provide cutting-edge high throughput genomics services to the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, and its affiliates.


Minimum Education: Associate's degree, Specialized/technical training, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols. Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data.
