Research Lab Technician II

Keck School of Medicine Los Angeles, California

The laboratory of Albert Y. Han, MD/PhD in the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery is seeking a talented individual to join as a research technician. The Han lab studies molecular mechanisms of head and neck cancer utilizing patient samples as well as pre-clinical models. The research technician will work closely with the team to collect and process patient specimens (tumor, blood and saliva), conduct in vitro/in vivo experiments, and perform bioinformatic analysis of genomic data.

The ideal candidate must be able to perform stem cell culture, generate of lentiviral constructs, perform qPCR, immunohistochemical staining, molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation), light and florescence microscopy, basic rodent surgical procedures. The candidate will handle and dispose of hazardous and non-hazardous materials in accordance with safety protocols. The candidate must be able to keep a meticulously organized patient specimen database. The candidate should be able to handle a variety of tasks simultaneously, must possess a high level of initiative, and the ability to work with little supervision. The candidate must demonstrate excellent oral and written communications skills. This is a unique opportunity for those preparing for advanced studies in medical research with ample interactions with collaborators and clinicians in the department.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in cancer biology, molecular biology, physiology, immunology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or related fields.
  • Proficient in molecular biology techniques such as cloning, DNA/RNA extraction, library preparation, qPCR, and others involving multiple scientific equipment.
  • 2+ year lab experience with strong record of accomplishments and project experience in cell culture, rodent model, or related translational research

The hourly rate range for this position is $24.23 - $30.32. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.


Minimum Education: Associate's degree, Specialized/technical training, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols. Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data.
