Senior Accountant - Accounting - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt) (Non-Union)

The Senior Accountant has and applies thorough knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) to support the Management Service Office (MSO) Finance team by performing complex financial analysis and financial reporting functions to ensure compliance with USC University and Keck Hospital policies and procedures and Federal and State laws and regulations. This position exercises independent judgment and initiative to resolve both routine and non-routine issues.

Support the Accounting Department. Has the ability to perform multiple projects, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with Department managers and staff.

Essential Duties:

  • Complete balance sheet analysis and reconciliation
  • Reconcile accounts, initiates corrective actions, and formulates and recommends system and process changes through evaluation, analysis of problems, and application of accounting theory.
  • Verify source documents for accuracy, completeness, authorization, and coding, as well as proper application of fees, refunds, collections, and discounts in order to verify general ledger balances, reconcile subsystems to the general ledger, and identify accounting system problems or weaknesses.
  • Establish and oversees accounting procedures and internal controls for asset and liability accounts, revenue and expense accounts, and equity accounts to ensure compliance with accounting standards and operating procedures.
  • Review financial transactions and applies accounting theory and principles to ensure compliance with GAAP/GASB and applicable laws, rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Apply accounting theory to account for revenues, expenditures, transfers, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and inventory in accordance with GAAP/GASB to accurately report the results of operations.
  • Check and assess all accounting records for accuracy
  • Prepare monthly financial reports and statements for the management
  • Perform monthly close (including preparation of lead schedules, preparing and posting journal entries, and maintenance of G/L)
  • Create/generate detail reports
  • Assist Controller with completion of annual audit
  • Assist with budget vs. actual reporting
  • Confer with financial and program staff in order to explain accounting policy and processes and resolve accounting discrepancies or disputes associated with account balances and reconciliations, reporting clarifications, payment authorizations, expenditures, and budget balances.
  • Assist Controller with other accounting projects on an as needed basis Fund Accounting (Foundation Financials or Marginal)
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree Accounting or closely related degree
  • Req 3 years Professional accounting, financial analysis, or related experience required. Preferably in a hospital or similar environment.
  • Req Extensive MS Excel functionality (pivot tables, v-lookups, sum-ifs, etc.)
  • Req Ability to multi-task and function in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment
  • Req Excellent communication, organizational and prioritization skills
  • Req Team oriented, positive attitude
  • Req Must possess strong GAAP accounting knowledge.
  • Req Strong computer skills including hands-on experience of MS Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint
  • Req Ability to communicate findings effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Req Strong analytical and interpersonal skills with a collaborative, team-based approach.
  • Req Ability to multi-task, work independently with minimal supervision, work under pressure, meet deadlines, and thrive in a fast-paced work environment

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $68,640.00 - $112,370.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
