Senior, Strategic Planning Associate - Strategy - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Exempt) (Non-Union)

The Senior Strategic Planning Associate will report directly to the Associate Administrator of Strategic Planning and Business Development and will work as part of a cross-functional team (including Planning/Business Intelligence and Strategic Business Development) evaluate, analyze and develop recommendations on strategy and business opportunities for Keck Medicine of USC, The Senior Strategic Planning Associate supports health system partners and is responsible for leading data analyses, market assessments, business plan development, and strategic planning initiatives. This position assists Strategic Planning leadership, plus partner management and staff, with ensuring quality and consistency of deliverables. The successful team member: • Develops, facilitates, and presents project deliverables, including strategy and business plans to Keck Medicine partners, to guide strategic and business decisions. May include leading and/or facilitating cross-functional project groups to support Keck Medicine leadership, clinical departments, and partners'. • Develops sophisticated business plans by identifying, retrieving and analyzing data, developing models and assumptions to support decisions and recommendations on strategic and business opportunities of large scope and impact to the organization. Uses quantitative and qualitative data from internal and external sources (e.g Strata, Clarify Health, Sg2, Vizient, Advisory Board, HCAi, Qlik, Tableau and Maptitude business intelligence applications) to inform the business plans and evaluate potential strategic planning / growth opportunities. • Prepares and defines comprehensive market and trend assessments/analyses that may include demand forecasts, competitor analyses, risk assessments, and the research, monitoring, evaluation of key market trends. • Supports the evaluation of potential transactions for physician group and hospital affiliations and new venture opportunities. • Works with Keck Medicine staff and leadership to convert strategy and business plans into implementation plans; supports monitoring of implemented strategies and the review of business plan targets. • Evaluates operational needs for Keck Medicine growth initiatives (e.g., program development, new services, and technology) in collaboration with operations leadership; includes facility planning, staffing requirements, capital needs and capacity analyses. • Evaluates detailed financial analyses, including income statements, cash flow analysis and balance sheets; as well as economic valuations using standard acceptable methodologies as needed. • Assists in supervising or training Strategic Planning staff on assigned projects as needed. • Provides consulting and project management support for Keck Medicine leadership, clinical departments and system partners as needed. • The Senior Strategic Planning Associate employs the judgment necessary to determine the accuracy and applicability of conclusions drawn from various data sources. • They exercises independence and judgment in the management of their time and workload; their work product is used directly by executive leadership to inform system-wide major capital projects and investments.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and assist with service line planning engagements using advanced modeling analytics. Consults and collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to evaluate strategic alignment, stakeholder engagement, and value proposition. Includes producing analyses based on SWOT interviews and analysis to identify potential risks and/or opportunities associated with new ventures; produce & circulate white papers of trends in technology, legislation, and payment which may impact the management and/or future development of existing and/or new programs, services, and general hospital operations
  • Leads and develops analyses that are key to Keck’s regional and ambulatory network strategy. Provides diligence and advice on hospital acquisitions, partnerships and satellite expansion ventures. Provide market expertise using GIS applications to define local service areas, profile competitor territories and conduct geographic / demographic analysis.
  • Analyze internal performance and external market conditions (market share, competitor growth strategies, payer mix, demographic trends). Forecast growth, provide scenario planning, and project potential growth impact to institution. Liaise with key service line stakeholders to advise on service line growth opportunities. Develop annual compendium for key service lines to be used by executive and board leadership.
  • Working in support of broader strategy efforts, lead physician and hospital focused analyses using Clarify Health and Sg2/Vizient or other applicable systems . Provide database management support for the product, designing / introducing financial valuation & market activity analyses for referral network strategy, and physician profile and medical group analytics.
  • Provide novel reports including include physician loyalty / facility alignment, network activity analysis, and referral pattern analysis. Assist with physician M&A analyses and finances.
  • Liaison to Keck’s internal business intelligence team for routine and annual data updates. Serves as Strategy Lead to work with business intelligence team to develop new dash boards including new inter-facility dashboard (Transfer, Patient Demographics) as necessary.
  • Collaborates cross-functionally with Finance, Decision Support, Medical Group, Business Development, Marketing, and other departments to assist with a full analysis of potential growth effort
  • Learns and analyzes health care industry dynamics and the competitive landscape.
  • Provides ad hoc reporting and statistical analyses, as requested.
  • Maintains currency with data analysis techniques, standards and related technologies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req Bachelor's degree With emphasis in business and healthcare (e.g. MBA, MHA, MHSA, MPH)
  • Req 3-5 years Related health care experience in planning, finance, strategy and/or business development experience in a healthcare organization or consulting organization providing services to the healthcare industry
  • Req Strong analytical thinking and problem solving skills
  • Req Proficient with Microsoft Office suite & web browser applications
  • Req Team player with history of collaboration, who has the ability to work independently
  • Req Working understanding of databases, spreadsheets, data visualization
  • Req Knowledge of business statistics and data analyses techniques
  • Req Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Req Ability to manage and analyze data
  • Req Willingness to ask questions if direction is unclear

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Master's degree With emphasis in business and healthcare (e.g. MBA, MHA, MHSA, MPH)

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)

The annual base salary range for this position is $95,680.00 - $158,230.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
