Financial Assistance Coordinator - Patient Accounting - Full Time 8 Hour Days (Non-Exempt) (Non-Union)

Keck Medicine of USC Hospital Alhambra, California

The Financial Assistance Coordinator (FAC) will manage the entire financial assistance process for all Hospitals under Keck Medical Center of USC: Keck Hospital, Norris Cancer Hospital and Verdugo Hills Hospital. FAC will review printed financial assistance applications and determines patient's eligibility for the program based on the hospital's Financial Assistance Policy and 501r compliance. The FAC will be responsible for communicating with patients and their families if documents are missing or lacking. The FAC notifies patients by letter of approval or denial and manages all accounts accordingly. Responsible for reporting and communicating to all Bad Debt vendors and USC Care monthly. The FAC will also be responsible for maintaining the FAA log and communicates necessary reports on a monthly or as needed basis.

Essential Duties:

  • Receives and evaluates completed FA applications which include financial statements, proofs of income, rent/mortgage, current taxes and correspondence.
  • Notifies patients of missing required documents necessary to finalize applications and follow up as needed.
  • Provide guidance and educate patients though the financial assistance process; respond to patients timely with compassion and active listening.
  • Performs all adjustments for the facilities in the patient accounting systems and emails spreadsheets to bad debt vendors and USC CARE so they can adjust on their end.
  • Maintain process logs, documents sent to patients and online web sites and monthly reports reportable that are associated with Financial Assistance and vendors and report data monthly/yearly to management.
  • Assists as back up for phone calls during peak times and/or as scheduled by supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by department leaders.

Required Qualifications:

  • Req High school or equivalent
  • Req 3 years Experience within the Patient Financial Services field.
  • Req Bilingual in English and Spanish- written and verbal.
  • Req Strong critical thinking and problem solving skills and abilities.
  • Req Excellent communication skills, interpersonal and organizational abilities.
  • Req Knowledge of office practices and procedures, including Microsoft Office.
  • Req Knowledge of business letter writing and ability to initiate correspondence independently.
  • Req Ability to interface with all levels -physicians and their office staff, hospital staff, patients and family members.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pref Experience in hospital-setting.
  • Pref Knowledge of billing processes, 501r Financial Assistance (FA) requirements and regulations.
  • Pref Knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

Required Licenses/Certifications:

  • Req Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)


The hourly rate range for this position is $22.00 - $34.18.
