Arts Laboratory Technician II
The USC Iovine and Young Academy is seeking a Digital Fabrication Lab Technician to join our dynamic team. We foster innovation, creativity, and hands-on learning in a cutting-edge academic environment. This role provides technical expertise in the implementation and operation of equipment within the student makerspaces. This is a benefits-eligible position with a regular work schedule of 12:30 PM to 8:30 PM, Tuesday through Friday, and 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on Saturday. Please note that, depending on business needs, the schedule may shift to a Wednesday through Sunday work week at various times during the academic year.
The Lab Technician will report to the Senior Facilities and Operations Manager and play a key role in supporting advanced classroom and makerspace environments. These spaces include technologies such as electronics, 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, and other fabrication tools. The successful candidate will assist faculty, students, and staff with the setup, operation, and maintenance of equipment and facilities. They will also mentor students working on class projects, providing guidance and technical support to foster hands-on learning and innovation.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
Principal duties will include:
- Deliver specialized technical support within studio, laboratory, and facility environments to assist students, faculty, and staff in the operation and application of advanced instructional technologies and equipment. This includes, but is not limited to, 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines.
- Conduct training sessions to ensure proper equipment usage, enforce safety protocols, maintain a structured and orderly environment, and provide guidance on project execution.
- Oversee inventory management and coordinate routine maintenance of equipment to ensure optimal functionality and availability.
- Design and facilitate workshops, contribute to the development of educational programs, and engage with internal and external communities to promote innovation and technical skill-building.
- Ensure strict adherence to institutional policies and procedures, as well as compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Provide supervision and direction to student workers and laboratory assistants, fostering a productive and safe working environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preferred Experience: 3-5 years in an additive/subtractive fabrication role or setting including the use of specialized classroom and maker space technologies and equipment (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, etc.).
- Strong communication, organizational, collaboration, and time-management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively within diverse teams comprising students, staff, and faculty.
- Familiarity with the operational structure and workflows of higher education institutions.

The hourly rate range for this position is $26.50 - $29.00. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
