Associate Director of Multi-Omics Mass Spectrometry Core Facility

The University of Southern California, Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (USC Mann) is recruiting for an experienced research scientist for an immediate opening as Associate Director of the Multi-Omics Mass Spectrometry Core Facility. 

We are looking for an enthusiastic self-starter who will contribute to a wide range of projects both within USC Mann and to the external scientific community at large. The facility provides comprehensive support for mass spectrometry using state-of-the-art technologies that broadly apply to proteomics, metabolomics, lipidomics, and MALDI imaging approaches.  The scope of some of the projects supported include basic, translational, and clinical research in cancer, chronic inflammatory conditions, infectious diseases, neuroscience, and pharmacological and biomarker discovery and development.

Main Responsibilities

  • Manage and participate in the day-to-day operations of the core laboratory including maintaining and troubleshooting instruments.
  • Maintain and develop workflows to conduct proteomic, metabolomics and lipidomics analyses. 
  • Work closely with investigators at USC and our external partners (academic, government and industry) on all aspects of their projects, including providing project support, consulting, and teaching practical interpretation of datasets, effectively communicating project progress, writing technical summaries, and assisting as needed with publication and grant writing. It is also expected that the candidate will collaborate and publish with colleagues at USC.
  • Supervise and train facility staff.
  • Manage budget and resource allocations and provides financial status reports.
  • Develop strategies to promote expansion of core user base within and outside USC.
  • Lead fundraising efforts in the preparation and submission of shared instrument grants.

Preferred Education Requirements

PhD in a scientific discipline is required for this position, preferably in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field.

Preferred Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Experience in mass spectrometry with significant hands-on expertise in operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in LCMS instrumentation. (Preferably 5 years of experience, 3 of which in a core setting.) (Bruker rapifleX, Sciex 6500, 5550, and/or Thermo Fisher Q-Exactive)
  • Experience with a wide range of established data analyses workflows and bioinformatics tools.
  • Track record demonstrating ability assist with interpretation of data and experimental design.
  • Excellent project management and communication skills are critical. 
  • Experience maintaining core budgets and finances. Preferred experience with writing grant applications.
  • Desired skills include experience with metabolomics, proteomics, and lipidomics and/or mutli-omic data integration.

The annual base salary range for this position is $120,000 - $145,000. Preferred Education: Master's degree Preferred Experience: 7 years related experience with specialized research and/or programs Preferred Skills: Related special education, licensing, or certifications based upon program content and services. Proven managerial skills. Knowledge of conceptualization and design concepts. Proven experience with budget development.
