Research Lab Tech II

Keck School of Medicine Los Angeles, California

The Laboratory of Immunoregulation in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine seeks a Research Laboratory Technician II position to join its multi-disciplinary research group. The research technician II position will provide general laboratory assistance to support research projects to understand peptidic effectors of mammalian innate immunity and drug development in the treatment of infectious diseases. The research technician will perform assignments that are non-routine and vary in complexity with minimal direction including handling panels of multi-drug resistant bacteria or fungi.  This position will require rodent animal handling and may require occasional flexible work hours depending on the demands of the experimental protocols and processing timelines.

Responsibilities:

  • Conducts research experiments following laboratory and safety protocols. Collects laboratory measurements and data. Computes results for a variety of research procedures,  tests, and techniques.
  • Perform cellular-based immune assays, and maintains mammalian,  bacterial, or fungal cells.
  • Perform flow cytometry
  • Perform drug treatments, weighing/monitoring, animal injections, tissue harvesting, and tissue/sample processing.
  • Maintains accurate records of procedures used to conduct experiments. Uses laboratory/computer equipment/statistical software to conduct analyses of experimental data. Provides routine interpretations of analyses.
  • Maintains and calibrates laboratory equipment. Performs and arranges for basic repairs. May alter equipment to meet experiment requirements.
  • Prepares chemical solutions for experimental use.
  • Handles and disposes of hazardous and non-hazardous materials following safety protocols.
  • Maintains and organizes laboratory supplies. Monitors inventory levels or secures supplies as needed.
  • Maintains research facility in orderly, operable condition. Maintains security and safety of laboratory equipment, samples, specimens, and data.
  • Conducts library research to assist in the planning and design of experiments.
  • Learns basic laboratory safety, and completes institutional training requirements.
  • Learn new techniques and maintain strict attention to detail of experimental protocol.
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills to collaborate successfully with the team.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The university reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.

Shift: Monday - Friday 8:30 am - 5:00 pm

This is a Grant Funded Position

Hourly range:

The hourly rate range for this position is $24.23 - $30.32 When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.


Minimum Education: Associate's degree, Specialized/technical training, Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education Preferred Education: Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences Minimum Experience: 2 years Minimum Field of Expertise: Working knowledge of laboratory equipment and research protocols. Knowledge of computer analysis techniques and ability to provide routine analysis and interpretation of research data. Preferred Experience: Research animal handling
