The Department of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences is committed to excellence in three equally important areas: clinical care, education, and research. The Department’s clinical educators and clinical services are a fundamental part of the academic and training missions. The team of mental health professionals offer a range of psychiatric and behavioral health services utilizing the most up-to-date research in the field and state-of-the-art technology. The Department of Psychiatry provides clinical services primarily at the Los Angeles General Medical Center, USC Student Health and student exclusive practices as part of Keck Medicine of USC, and additional ambulatory practices for Keck Medicine of USC, including Keck Hospital of USC, USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the USC Care Medical Group.

Position Description
Through our educational and training programs, we strive to advance the future of psychiatric and behavioral health education, promote lifelong learning, and make a positive impact on the mental health landscape. The Vice Chair for Education (VCE) aligns with the Department’s mission and is responsible for leading the educational and training programs. The VCE reports to the Department Chair and works in concert with fellow Vice-Chairs and division directors to assure high quality education and training in a scholarly environment, compliant with regulatory bodies. The educational programs within the department span pre- and post-graduate training, as well as undergraduate and continuing medical education, and include:
Psychiatry Residency Training Program Psychiatry Specialty Fellowship Training Programs
- Child & Adolescent Fellowship
- Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship
- Consultation-Liaison Fellowship
Medical Student Education Psychology training programs (Pre- and Post-doctoral level programs) Master’s level training programs (counseling, social work, and marriage & family therapy; Pre- and Post-graduate level programs) Undergraduate classes Continuing Education programs
The profile of activities for the position will be comprised approximately of 25% Administrative time, 50% Clinical time (as teaching attending + direct clinical care), and 25% didactic educational activities.
Direct reports to this position include:
Residency Training Director Medical Student Education Director Psychology/Social Training Director Director of CME Director of Undergraduate/Graduate education (non-medical)
* Associate program directors and fellowship directors, program coordinator and the administrative assistant report to the residency training directors
ADMINISTRATIVE (25%):
- Participate in weekly meetings of the department vice chairs with the Chair and help inform and guide decision-making for the department
- Assist the Chair with department annual reports to the School of Medicine
- Ensure quality and meritorious accreditation of educational programs
- Partner with individual Program Directors to promote improvement and innovation
- Oversee processes for recruitment, clinical and didactic curricula, and evaluation
- Foster diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, and workforce wellness
- Oversee administrative management and financial stewardship of education program resources.
- Secure grants or other sources of funding and collaborate with Office of Development for education programs
- Prepare succession plans for leadership of individual training programs and oversee transitions of leadership to ensure stability of educational programs
Faculty Recruitment and Development:
In collaboration with Vice-Chairs for Faculty Development and Clinical Affairs:
- Foster community, integration, and collaboration among training program leaders
- Promote the development of teaching faculty and trainees
- Assist with the recruitment and retention of teaching faculty
- Support new faculty and engage them in education, training, and mentorship
- Promote and facilitate scholarly activity by teaching faculty and trainees
- Review and support the promotion of teaching faculty
- Complete semi-annual performance reviews for Program Directors as they relate to education
- Ensure continuous certification by relevant boards
Trainee Engagement:
- Promote a shared culture and identity among trainees and students as members of the department
- Responsible for overseeing the evaluation and performance of teaching faculty and trainees
Collaboration and Partnerships:
- Represent the department education programs at institutional and national levels (Education)

- Engage with the Keck School of Medicine and participate in medical school initiatives
Innovation and Growth:
- Develop future educational programs such as additional fellowship programs
- Develop and expand undergraduate classes at USC
EDUCATION (25%):
- Mentor faculty and trainees with specific interests in medical and graduate education
- Provide clinical and/or didactic education to trainees in the areas of your specialty
CLINCIAL (50%):
- Provide direct patient care consistent with interests/expertise and the needs of the department
- Providing clinical care in training environments (“bedside teaching”)
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be a State of California Licensed Physician (or eligible) and a board certified or board eligible psychiatrist (must be board certified prior to start), a licensed psychologist or a licensed masters level therapist.
- Experience leading and managing residency, fellowship, and other psychiatry or behavioral health training programs
- Resilient, self-aware, and able to thrive in a fast paced, demanding environment.
- Effectively works in a highly diverse, multicultural, and LGBTQIA+ affirmative environment.
- Commitment to the highest ethical standards of professional practice and to professional integrity.
- Desire to grow as a professional in an academic medical environment and committed to excellence and lifelong learning.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior Vice-Chair or equivalent leadership position or experience
- Additional language skills are welcome.
The annual base salary range for this position is $175,000-$350,000. When extending an offer of employment, the University of Southern California considers factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and
responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, federal, state, and local laws, contractual stipulations, grant funding, as well as external market and organizational considerations.
