The city of Los Angeles boasts endless attractions and tourist destinations. Amongst all of the sights and sounds, the USC Hotel offers a modern and convenient place to unwind, with 240 spacious, comfortable guest rooms and over 15,000 square feet of flexible event space. Owned and operated by the University of Southern California, and the site of a recent multi-million dollar renovation, the hotel features luxurious fabrics and artwork depicting the storied traditions of USC. Additional renovations, which include the restaurants and kitchens, are in the planning stage.
We are seeking an Engineering Technician, USC Hotel, to join our rapidly growing team.
Position Overview:
The Engineering Technician supports the Chief Engineer in the daily operation and maintenance of the hotel’s physical infrastructure. This role requires a journeyman-level background with skilled trades (such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, or mechanical systems) and a strong working knowledge of building operations. The Engineering Technician ensures that all mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and life safety systems function efficiently, safely, and in compliance with applicable codes and standards. Responsibilities include troubleshooting MEP issues, performing routine inspections, and assisting with preventive maintenance programs. This position plays a key role in maintaining a comfortable, safe, and well-functioning environment for guests and staff.
The Accountabilities:
Assist in the daily operations of the engineering department, coordinating the repair and maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing systems. Ensure prompt response to all service requests, including urgent or emergency situations.
Perform preventive maintenance and repairs on commercial freezers, walk-in refrigerators, package units, heat pumps, swamp coolers, boilers, and pumps; utilize journeyman-level trade skills to diagnose and service both low and high voltage electrical systems, with a solid understanding of controls and troubleshooting techniques.
Respond to urgent guest or operational issues and be available to report on-site during emergencies such as power outages, major plumbing leaks, or equipment failures to support operational continuity.
Utilize the hotel’s preventive maintenance system to schedule, execute, and track routine maintenance tasks, ensuring the longevity and efficiency of all hotel equipment and infrastructure. Maintain detailed and accurate logs of all completed work.
Support the ongoing development of the asset management database and assist in establishing a robust inventory accounting system under the direction of the Chief Engineer.
Ensure the engineering department’s compliance with all local, state, and federal safety codes and building regulations; conduct routine safety inspections and assist the Chief Engineer with the development and implementation of emergency preparedness plans.
Collaborate with other departments to promptly resolve guest issues and maintain a high standard of service. Provide technical support for capital improvement projects and coordinate with vendors and contractors under the direction of the Chief Engineer.
Provides general maintenance and repairs for facilities and equipment (e.g., air conditioners, heaters, appliances, furniture, pumps, copiers, cooling towers video equipment, door locks, cabinets, sinks, etc.), which may include electrical, carpentry, painting, plumbing and locksmith services. Performs installation work and on-going preventive maintenance. Resolves problems and follows through on work order requests.
Maintains logs of facilities and equipment maintenance, repairs and/or requests. Communicates status of work orders to appropriate staff.
Provides technical management services for telecommunications equipment repairs and access. Coordinates installation, removal and repairs. Implements software and hardware changes. Maintains equipment inventory, calling card account log and access privileges. Provides staff training on telephones and voicemail.
Maintains facilities' main security accesses. Orders and maintains keys. Coordinates locksmith services.
Oversees routine maintenance inspections of facilities for deficiencies, health and safety hazards, and/or code violations.
Maintains on-site storage areas. Provides units with adequate space. Implements security related procedures and ensures security measures are in place.
Oversees facility maintenance staff and/or student workers as assigned. Monitors and follows-up on the status of work order requests to ensure assignments are completed properly and within established timeframe.
Assists with special projects as needed or required. Oversees facilities services in the absence of facilities manager.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested. The University reserves the right to add or change duties at any time.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education: High School or equivalent. Combined experience/education as substitute for minimum education.
Experience:
Minimum of 3-5 years of progressive experience in hotel engineering, facilities maintenance, HVAC/R, or a related trade field.
Experience in general maintenance and repair for carpentry, electrical, plumbing, locksmith, painting, mechanics and engineering (e.g., air conditioning, heating, and refrigeration systems) trades.
Knowledge of telecommunications software and hardware.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree.
Specialized/Technical training
Additional Information:
No set schedule.
May be required to work weekends, evenings and/or holidays.
Must have full availability to support the needs of the business.

The hourly rate for this position is $30.00. When determining an offer, the University of Southern California considers factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the role, the candidate’s experience, education, training, key skills, internal peer alignment, applicable laws, contractual requirements, grant funding, and market conditions.
